Internal Family Systems TherapyTrauma TherapyWhat is IFS?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is based on the idea that we all have different parts of ourselves. You might notice a part that worries, a part that tries to keep everyone happy, a part that gets angry, or a part that pushes difficult feelings away. These parts often develop to help us cope with life and protect us from getting hurt.
In counselling, we gently explore these parts to better understand what they’re feeling, what they need, and why they respond the way they do. Rather than fighting against these parts or judging ourselves, we learn to approach them with curiosity and compassion.
It can feel counterintuitive, but giving these parts space and understanding doesn't mean letting them take over or giving them more control. In fact, the opposite often happens. When we stop fighting our feelings and begin to understand them, they no longer have to work so hard to get our attention. They can become quieter, less activated, and less in control of our reactions. This helps us feel less stuck in old patterns, understand ourselves more deeply, and respond to life in ways that feel more balanced and true to who we are.
